Continental Girbau Commercial Washer & Dryer Troubleshooting
What's Different About Continental Girbau
Continental Girbau washer-extractors and dryers run in on-premise laundries and laundromats throughout New Jersey and the tri-state. Their high-speed soft-mount washers extract hard, which is why operators buy them — and why the suspension and the balance system are the first places to look when one starts misbehaving.
This guide covers Continental Girbau E-Series, L-Series, G-Series and ProSeries washer-extractors, ED and DR series tumble dryers, and the Inteli and Logi control systems. (We do not service Continental flatwork ironers or finishing equipment.) It walks through the failure symptoms we get called about most, what an operator can safely check before picking up the phone, and the point where troubleshooting should stop and a technician should take over. HM Commercial Laundry repairs Continental Girbau equipment as an independent service company across New Jersey, New York City, Rockland County and eastern Pennsylvania.
Continental's high-G soft-mount washer-extractors spin fast enough that the control watches balance closely and will slow or abort an extract rather than shake the machine apart. A washer that finishes the cycle with wet linen is often doing exactly what it was told: protecting itself from an unbalanced load. The Inteli and Logi controls are fully programmable, so a cycle that "changed on its own" is usually a program that was edited, not a fault. Pull the fault log before touching anything.
Safety first: Never bypass a door lock or lint-panel interlock, never open electrical panels with the machine energized, and never work on gas connections yourself. If a check below isn't something you can do from the outside of the machine, leave it for us — call (732) 681-0500.
A Note on Continental Girbau Error Codes
Inteli and Logi controls report faults with codes whose meaning depends on the control version and the machine's program. Rather than publish a code table that may not match your control, we keep this guide symptom-based. If your machine is showing a code, write it down exactly as displayed along with the model number, then call us at (732) 681-0500. We'll tell you what it means on your machine and whether it's worth a service call.
Continental Girbau Washer Won't Start
A Continental Girbau washer that is completely dead, or powers up but won't begin a cycle, usually comes down to power, the door, or the start circuit.
- Check power at the source. Confirm the breaker hasn't tripped and, on hardwired machines, that the disconnect is on. If one machine in a bank is dead and its neighbors run, the problem is local to that machine.
- Check the door. Commercial washers will not start unless the door is fully closed and the lock engages. Look for linen caught in the gasket, a bent strike, or debris in the latch. If the door closes but never clicks locked, the door lock assembly or its switch is the prime suspect.
- Check the payment or start system. On coin or card machines, a jammed coin drop, a full coin vault, or a failed card reader blocks the start signal even though the washer itself is fine.
- Check the emergency stop and the control. On programmable machines make sure an e-stop isn't latched and the display isn't sitting on a lockout message that needs clearing.
When it's beyond the operator: if power, door and start circuit all check out, the usual culprits are the door lock assembly, a start relay, or the control board. Those are diagnose-with-a-meter repairs; a control board is one of the most expensive parts on the machine, so don't guess-and-swap.
Continental Girbau Washer Won't Fill
The machine starts, the cycle runs, but little or no water enters the drum, or the fill takes so long the control times out.
- Confirm both supply valves are open. Hot and cold shutoffs behind the machine get bumped closed more often than you'd think, especially after other work in the room.
- Check building water pressure. If a sink in the same room runs weak, the problem is upstream of the washer.
- Clean the inlet screens. Sediment-clogged screens where the hoses meet the machine are one of the most common causes of slow fill, and cleaning them is a five-minute job with the water shut off.
- Look at the drain. A drain valve stuck open lets water leave as fast as it enters. The symptom looks like a fill problem but it's really a drain problem.
When it's beyond the operator: failed water inlet valves, a bad level sensor or pressure switch, or a drain valve that won't seat. All single-visit repairs with the part on the truck.
Continental Girbau Washer Won't Spin or Extract
The wash runs but the drum never gets up to extract speed, or the control aborts the spin and leaves the linen soaking wet.
- Redistribute the load. An unbalanced or under-sized load is the number-one cause of an aborted extract on a commercial washer. Open the door, spread the load, and run a drain-and-spin.
- Listen on the next attempt. A hum with no rotation is a drive issue; grinding or rumble under load is bearings; a squeal that fades is a belt.
- Check the mounting. On a Continental soft-mount, repeated balance aborts with normal loads mean the suspension (springs, shocks, out-of-balance switch) needs a technician; keep running it and you'll be replacing bearings next.
When it's beyond the operator: drive belts, motor or drive faults, bearings, and balance sensors are all technician work. Don't keep running a machine that grinds on spin; the bearing repair gets far more expensive once the seal lets water into it.
Continental Girbau Washer Won't Drain
Water is left standing in the drum at the end of the cycle, or the machine won't advance past the drain step.
- Check the drain path. A kinked or crushed drain hose, or a building floor drain backing up, stops the machine as surely as a bad valve. Look at the trough or floor drain first.
- Clear the drain valve or pump. Small items (socks, coins, pen caps) are the classic cause. Power off, water off, and check the drain valve body or pump trap if your machine has an accessible one.
- Note the timing. If the machine drains but slowly, and then errors, it's usually a partial blockage; if it never drains, the valve or pump isn't being told to open.
When it's beyond the operator: a failed drain valve, a dead drain pump, or a control that isn't energizing either. We carry drain valves for the common models on the truck.
Continental Girbau Dryer Not Heating
The drum turns, the cycle runs, but the air stays cool, or the dryer heats for a while and then goes cold.
- Clean the lint screen and look at the exhaust. Restricted airflow is the number-one cause of no-heat and long-dry-time calls on commercial dryers. A high-limit thermostat trips to protect the machine; it will keep tripping until the duct is clear.
- Confirm the gas supply. On gas dryers, make sure the gas shutoff is open and other gas appliances in the building are working. Never work on gas connections yourself.
- Check the heater breaker. On electric dryers, the heater circuit is usually on its own breaker; a tripped one leaves the drum turning with no heat.
- Note the pattern. Continental ED and DR series dryers with reversing drums depend on the reversing contactor and timer; a drum that only turns one way is a control-side fault, not a motor failure.
When it's beyond the operator: igniters, flame sensors, gas valves, heater elements, safety thermostats and airflow sensors. These are the parts we stock for the dryers we see most, so most no-heat calls are one visit.
Maintenance That Prevents Most of These Calls
Most Continental Girbau service calls in on-premise laundries and laundromats trace back to the same handful of neglected items:
- Every shift: Clean lint screens on the dryers, wipe door gaskets, and leave washer doors open between loads so seals dry.
- Monthly: Inspect drive belts for glazing and cracks, clear the drain path and the building floor drain, and check that supply screens are clean.
- Quarterly: Have the full dryer exhaust duct cleaned — the duct, not just the screen. Check washer anchor bolts on hardmount machines.
- Annually: A professional inspection of bearings, seals, door locks, ignition components, safety thermostats, and the control fault log catches failures while they're still cheap.
If you'd rather not track any of that, our preventive maintenance programs put your Continental Girbau equipment, and everything else on the laundry floor, on a scheduled inspection cycle with priority dispatch when something slips through.
When to Call for Continental Girbau Repair
Stop troubleshooting and call us at (732) 681-0500 if:
- Anything involves gas, burning smells, smoke, or scorched wiring — immediately
- The machine trips its breaker or a safety thermostat more than once
- Water is leaking from the shaft seal area (rear of the drum), not the door gasket
- You hear grinding, knocking, or bearing rumble during spin
- An error code returns after one power cycle, or you can't identify it — call with the code and model number
- The quick checks above didn't fix it — every hour a commercial machine is down costs revenue or piles up linen

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an independent service company repair Continental Girbau commercial machines?
Yes. Continental Girbau commercial equipment can be serviced by any qualified commercial laundry technician. HM Commercial Laundry is not a Continental Girbau dealer; we repair Continental Girbau machines every week across New Jersey, NYC, Rockland County and eastern Pennsylvania as an independent service company, with OEM parts.
What does the error code on my Continental Girbau machine mean?
Inteli and Logi controls report faults with codes whose meaning depends on the control version and the machine's program. Rather than guess from a generic table, write down the exact code and the model number and call HM Commercial Laundry at (732) 681-0500. We'll tell you what it means on your specific machine and whether it needs a visit.
Why is my Continental Girbau dryer running but not heating?
The most common causes are restricted airflow from lint buildup (which trips a safety thermostat), a closed or interrupted gas supply, or a failed ignition component such as the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve. On electric models, check for a tripped heater-circuit breaker. Clean the lint screen and check the exhaust first; leave gas-side and electrical repairs to a technician.
How much does Continental Girbau repair cost in New Jersey?
HM Commercial Laundry's New Jersey rate is $295 for the first hour, which covers travel and diagnosis, then $150 per additional hour, plus parts. Most common Continental Girbau repairs (door locks, inlet valves, belts, drain valves, shocks) finish in one visit because we stock the high-failure parts on the truck. Outside New Jersey the first hour is $395.
How fast can you get to a down Continental Girbau machine?
Same-day in most of New Jersey when you call before noon, and emergency dispatch when a down machine is stopping the operation. We also cover the five NYC boroughs, Rockland County NY, eastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware from Jackson, NJ.
Continental Girbau machine down?
HM Commercial Laundry provides independent Continental Girbau repair from our Jackson, NJ headquarters — 647 Herman Rd #3, Jackson, NJ 08527 — serving all 21 NJ counties plus NYC, Rockland County and eastern PA. Call (732) 681-0500 or email service@hmservicetech.com.
